Google Lens has recently launched a new feature as part of its new Multitask Unified Model (MUM) technology: multisearch. The feature, released on April 7, 2022, provides a new way for consumers to interact with AI technology.
What is Multisearch?
Google’s multisearch allows you to combine text and images together to improve your search results. Check out Google’s article here for an in-depth explanation of how this will work. Here are the basics of how to use multisearch:
- Open Google
- Tap the Lens icon
- Pull up a picture from your photos or use your camera to take one
- Swipe up and tap the “+ Add to your search” button
- Add your text
And Google takes care of the rest! This new feature allows you to take a picture of a plant, type “how to care”, and discover exactly what the plant is and what it needs. This is also a great way for consumers to shop; they can simply take a picture of clothing or a chair, search for different colors or styles, and find exactly what they’re looking for.
How Will This Affect SEO?
The importance of SEO for businesses is on the rise. Most consumers discover the home services they’re looking for through the internet. Because of this, understanding and using SEO is critical for your business to get search traffic, and thus, business.
It might not seem immediately obvious, but Google Lens’s multisearch feature can really have an impact on what people search for relating to your business. Let’s see an example:
→ They snap a picture using Google Lens and search “repair” or “repair near me”.
→ A person notices that the spring on their garage door is broken.
→ Multisearch uses the image and text to figure out what the person is looking for, directing them to “garage door spring repair near me”.
Consumers who don’t know the name of the parts on their garages can still search for what they need. This can be a great way to bring in more business! A potential client could also use a photo of a neighbor’s garage door, roof, or car to get information on where to buy it. Good marketing could lead those potential clients right to your website!
What Does This Mean for Your Company?
Multisearch can bring in a lot of business to your company if you know what to do. This is a great time to really focus on your keyword usage with SEO. Google needs to be able to know exactly what you do and exactly where you are so it can direct these searches your way.
Providing specific images that use alt tags with your keywords can also help. For example, if you have a picture of a broken garage spring with an alt tag that says “broken garage door spring repair” or something similar, a search like the one from earlier will line up nicely. So basically, give Google every chance to see that your page has the results that people are searching for.
